Here’s an overview of the sources I used that proved to be very beneficial to my study on Mastani:
1. Mastani (Wikipedia Page)
This article touched on a brief overview of her entire life, and what her skills were. It contained categories of Early Life, Biography, Death, Descendants, Mastani in popular culture, and References. Though not very research heavy, it gave me a good idea of the basic events of her story and where she came from.
Like most Wikipedia pages, this was a good starting point. I read it to get a quick overview, but I didn’t take any of the information for granted. It led me to further references, which were much more useful, but this was a good base.
2. Bajirao Mastani directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali (Bollywood Movie)
This movie, starring Ranveer Singh as Bajirao and Deepika Padukone as Mastani, was historically accurate for the most part. It was useful to see people portray these characters and see most of the events I’d been researching come to life. It was largely based on their love story, but still showed Mastani’s fierceness.
This source was useful to me not in the light of research, but in getting into character. I had watched this film to get a better idea of how I should present my speech and how I should act at my learning centre.
3. Historians Know Very Little About Mastani or Her Relationship With Bajirao by Mridula Chari (Online Article)
This article talked about the many misconceptions in the movie, and some of the controversiality that was included it. It backed up some missing gaps with real research and mentioned a lot of names I hadn’t heard before.
Since I had watched the movie before even starting this study, reading this article helped me fill in some gaps and separate fiction from non-fiction.
4. The Story of Bajirao Mastani – An Epic Love Tragedy by Karan H. (Online Article)
This article talks about what Mastani was like, what Bajirao was like, and what Bajirao’s first wife was like. It also covered “the turning point” when Mastani had a child and the repercussions of that.
This broadened my understanding of the people Bajirao had in his life other than Mastani, and because of reading this I was able to draw some of the information learned from this article while talking to people during my learning centre.
5. Why Bajirao Mastani Has Upset Two Families by Ranjita Ganesan (Online Article)
This article talked about the very technical points in the movie Bajirao Mastani that were incorrect, and brought up a lot of terms I hadn’t heard of, such as the specific type of dance Mastani did and the battle terms.
Again, I was able to use this information while speaking to people at my learning centre, and it also helped me understand the proper order of events.
6. Traces of Mastani in Pune Fort Still Tell Her Tale by Garima Rakesh Mishra (Online Article)
This article covered the story of how and why the Mastani Mahal was built, what was contained inside of it, and what it looks like today. It also talked about the religious importance of it.
This was extremely useful in building my learning centre, as I learned what kind of atmosphere it had and what types of things I should include (swords, instruments).
7. Bajirao Mastani: The Love Story of a Warrior by Anu Thapa (Online Article)
This article had a very in-depth summary of the movie itself (useful because I didn’t have to watch the movie again) and made a lot of connections from it to other Bollywood movies.
It was written by someone who has a PhD student in the Cinematic Arts Department at the University of Iowa, and that got the gears in my head turning about the industry itself, which led to my interview!
8. Mastani by World Heritage Encyclopedia (World Public Library Book)
9. Who Was Mastani? by Sourav K. (Online Article)
This source covers a lot of ground on Mastani, her background, and her entire life. It contains a very large biography and has more references at the end of the article.
This is where I learned most of the things I know about Mastani, which proved useful in every aspect of my project. It is a very informational and trustworthy source.
This article talked a lot about Mastani’s religion and how it affected her, and what her parents’ heritage was, as well. It covered a lot about how Mastani and Bajirao first met, as that had to do a lot with her father.
A lot of articles mentioned the discrimination she faced because of her religion and the major things that came out of it (house arrest, attempted murder), but this one really dug deep. It was very helpful while writing my speech.
